This formula provide an estimation of the average power saved by a wind propulsion system.  

This formula is based on a limited number of parameters and is divided into two distinct expressions. The first covers all known sailing systems, with the exception of dynamic kites, for which the specific physics justifies a second dedicated expression.

This tool is intended as a first approach for players wishing to adopt a propulsion system without having yet defined the type of propulsion to be favored.

The formula is published under a Creative Commons license, and may be freely used, including for commercial purposes, subject to the following conditions: 

• Cite the authors of the formula
• Do not modify it

This last condition aims to preserve the accuracy of the results. 

This formula is likely to evolve to take account of new knowledge and feedback. These modifications will be made by CRAIN, in collaboration with users.
